Passenger balloons in Cappadocia fly at sunrise. They do not fly if the ground wind at take-off exceeds 10 knots or if the SHGM flag decision is red or yellow. Sources give an average of 220 to 260 flying days a year.
When and at what time do balloon flights take place in Cappadocia?
Passenger balloons in Cappadocia take off at sunrise. According to information from the Cratus Stone Palace reception, the flight lasts about 1 hour, and the whole experience, transfers included, takes about 3 hours. The Wikipedia article on Cappadocia also notes that sunrise flights are especially popular around Göreme.
Sunrise changes through the year, so the take-off time changes too. The operator you book with confirms the exact time.
The sources do not define a closed season for flights; the weather decides. The Online Turkish Tourism Encyclopedia, citing SHGM data, states that flights take place on an average of 260 days a year, depending on weather, with about 90 flights a day. Anadolu Agency reports an average of 220 flying days a year. The sources give different averages, but none says that flights happen every day.
In what weather do balloons not fly?
A hot air balloon with passengers does not fly if the ground wind at the take-off point and time is above 10 knots (about 18.5 km/h). Article 13 of the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) instruction on balloon flight operations (SHT-OPS-B) sets this rule. A flight is also not made if the wind forecast for the expected landing place and time exceeds the take-off limit.
The same article also prohibits flying in these cases:
- Visibility is 2,000 metres or less.
- The balloon is closer than 450 metres vertically or 600 metres horizontally to clouds.
- Thermals or cumulonimbus clouds are present.
Who decides to cancel a balloon flight?
Whether a flight goes ahead depends on the flag decision of the Meteorological Assessment Group (MDG) set up by SHGM, and then on the balloon operator and the responsible pilot. Under Articles 23 and 24 of SHT-OPS-B, the MDG is made up of responsible pilots working in the flight area, chosen by SHGM. The assessment starts one day before the flight and is finalised on the day of the flight before the flight time.
The result is published as one of three flags by SHGM or by the Slot Service Center (SHM) it authorises:
- Red flag: no flying. It cannot be changed by re-assessment once published.
- Yellow flag: preparation is allowed, but no flying.
- Green flag: flying is possible. It is a recommendation; responsibility lies with the responsible pilot and the operator.
Starting a flight under a yellow or red flag is prohibited. One example from Nevşehir: according to a DHA report dated 19 May 2026, balloon tours could not be held for three days because of rain and wind, and the cancellation followed the assessment of the SHGM Nevşehir Coordination Office.
What happens if a balloon flight is cancelled?
In the SHGM instructions I reviewed, there is no single refund or rebooking rule for a passenger flight cancelled because of weather. What you get on cancellation, whether a refund, a move to another day or another option, depends on the operator and the booking terms. Ask for the operator’s written cancellation terms before you book.
According to information from the Cratus Stone Palace reception, balloon and tour bookings depend on weather, and the decision is made close to the flight time.
Are there age and health requirements for balloon flights?
According to information from the Cratus Stone Palace reception, children under 6 are not taken on balloon flights and pregnant women cannot take part. The same information says that some operators charge an extra fee for passengers over 120 kg.
SHT-OPS-B leaves the carriage of people who need special conditions or assistance to the responsible pilot, who must ensure the safety of the balloon and everyone on board. Guests with special needs should therefore tell the operator before booking. For the hotel’s own answers, see the frequently asked questions.
How do Cratus Stone Palace guests book a balloon flight?
Guests at Cratus Stone Palace book a balloon tour at the reception. Activities booked through the reception also include the red, green and blue tours, ATV, horse safari and Jeep Safari; balloon and tour bookings depend on weather. For the full list of activities, see the experiences page.
Cratus Stone Palace holds a Ministry of Culture and Tourism Special Accommodation Facility (Özel Konaklama Tesisi) certificate. Address: Avcılar Mahallesi Belediye Arkası No:11, Göreme / Nevşehir, Turkey. At sunrise, balloons drift over the hotel. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at 12:00.
